The Wedding Day

Oh how I love weddings. Actually, I love LOVE...and weddings are all about this, so I am a HUGE fan. Hopeless romantic here. We had a lot of fun the morning of the wedding, since it was just the four of us getting ready...all while enjoying mimosas. I still think our wedding was the best ever, but I think this was the 2nd best way to go. They opted for an intimate wedding in their own living room, only 10 people total, including the photographer. So casual, relaxed, and full of obvious and apparent love.
It was good fortune that Adam and I ended up staying there, as they decided to try out tying bow ties for the very first time ever on the morning of the wedding. Adam and I helped them out and it was a lot of fun. They own a house on the Big Island in Hawaii, and the aloha spirit is very much a part of who they are, so they had leis flown in for everyone for the ceremony. I miss leis being a regular part of my life. *Sigh, I miss Hawaii*.
Out of respect for and request of the newlyweds, I am not posting any picts of the wedding...but it should be said that they looked incredibly dapper.

Observing the vow exchange, note my desperate hold on the hankerchief

So yes, I am a hopeless romantic, I am known for tearing up at weddings, engagements, girly movies, a 30 second commercial...you get the point. Let's set the scene for you. There is the couple, Jay's mom, the two officiants (also friends), the two best men, us, and the photographer...so 10 people total at the wedding. They chose to get married in an intimate ceremony in their home, it is relaxed and intimate, so we are just sitting in the living room watching them exchange vows. I completely LOSE IT. I am talking racking sobs. I don't know what my problem was, other than just being completely overwhelmed by the obvious love and excitement emanating from the vow exchange between these two people that I love dearly. I am trying to be quiet...and desperately failing. One of the best men gives me his handkerchief. I have never needed to actually wipe my eyes at a wedding before, it had always been confined to tearing up and the tears reabsorbing. Not this time. I am an mess along with my mascara and eyeliner. It gets to the point that Uncle Neal cracks up laughing at me in the middle of his vows. Yep, I was THAT guest. Thankfully they love me and I don't get kicked out.

It was an incredibly powerful day full of love and wonderful people. We are so blessed that this couple is a part of our lives.

Mecca Hills/Painted Canyon Hike

One consistent theme from much of our CA trip is our getting in as many hikes as we could. This is going to come as a shock to anyone who knows how we travel: We even CHECKED A BAG to be able to carry our gear with us. We haven't checked a bag since we moved back from Hawaii and had to carry everything with us. Our ever fantastic hosts recommended the Painted Hills as a day trip and it definitely did NOT disappoint.

Fresh lemons anyone?

Authentic Mexcian? Oh HELL YES! His....
When in Southern California what better cuisine to indulge in than Mexican? I may be an incredibly healthy eater and health conscious, but all of that goes out the window when authentic Mexican food is a possibility. If you are ever in the Palm Springs area, check out El Ranchito. Oh dear God, I am sitting here salivating just thinking about it. It's amazing and wicked cheap. Also, make sure to get a big ol' cup of horchata. We ate here twice.

....and hers. We ate every bite.

Hello Southern California!

When Uncle Neal announced his engagement at our family gathering last September, I pretty much lost my mind with excitement (and may or may not have physically hurt him with hugging and jumping around) and promised that we would be there. In hindsight, I probably should have waited for an invitation or something, haha.
He and I have an interesting relationship. He is actually the ex-husband of my dad's baby sister. They got divorced F O R E V E R ago, literally. Adam and I reconnected with him when we moved back from Hawaii, because he was in area, and still the father of my awesome cousins. It has just been an awesome relationship that has grown. We have SO much in common with him, that he really is a very important member of our family.
There is the family that you are born into and the family that you create. That is my mantra for life. I think everyone understands this....we all have people in our life that we are not related to but that are a billion times closer to us and more important to us than those that we are connected to by blood. Uncle Neal is one of those. That and I cannot untrain my auto-pilot calling him "Uncle Neal".
So fast forward a few months and it is time for the wedding. They opted to get married on a Tuesday to celebrate it actually marking their 14 year anniversary and have the reception on a Saturday, so everyone else could celebrate with them (as Tuesday is kind of a awkward day for most people). Well, not us. We'll take any excuse for travel and awesome experiences...so to Southern California we went for 10 *FANTASTIC* days.

Layover in Dallas? One pound of brisket please.
No, I don't want sides...I just want meat.
No, I am not kidding.

We landed late Saturday night, we just all sat around chit-chatting for a few hours before the day of travel caught up with us and we passed out. Thanks to jet-lag and the 3 hour time difference, we were up BRIGHT AND EARLY. The day started with an awesome breakfast in Palm Spring and a nice walk around downtown. Palm Springs is currently home to the infamous Marilyn Monroe statue so we made sure to check her out as well as the near by hat store. I am obsessed with hats. I am also obsessed with how amazing Adam looks wearing a hat, despite the fact that the only hat he owns is a winter cap.

So amazing

Well, our plan was to spend the morning in Palm Springs and then head to LA for the afternoon and night to check out the LA scene, but that didn't quite pan out. We were having such a *FANTASTIC* time with our awesome hosts that we didn't want to leave. And they didn't want us to. So we didn't.
We still haven't experienced LA, but I know it has nothing on our experiences that week.
Instead we headed down to walk the Thousand Palms Oasis in the Coachella Valley (yes, where the huge festival is every year). It was incredible. The area is complete deserts and right in the middle of absolutely nothing of desolate and dry nothing is this amazingly lush and vibrant string of oasis's. I have never experienced one in real life and they are a marvel of Mother Nature.

Delaware Road Trip

One of Adam's favorite breweries is Dogfish Head and it seems that we have made it an annual tradition to trek out to the Eastern Shore each year since our return to the mainland (2013 with my parents, 2012 for Adam's birthday), and for 2014 we were joined by the Pennocks. We have been friends with Jake and Sarah since we all lived in Hawaii, both of the guys coming back to work for Cyberpoint. Instead of a day trip, we opted to make this an entire weekend excursion, and designed an entire brewery/winery/distillery tour around it.

Our Weekend Itinerary:

Fordham and Old Dominion

Dogfish Head Brewery

Palo Santo wood, what the holding tank is made of...SO heavy

All of the breweries and tours were awesome. This statement is coming from a non-beer drinker, mind you, so I think that is saying a lot. Fortunately for this crew, it meant that there was a built in designated driver. Of note, both Fordham/Old Dominion and Dogfish Head also "brew" their own soda lines, so there are things for the non-beer drinkers to taste. While I am not a big fan of soda at all, all of them were REALLY amazing. Fordham had a non-alcoholic root beer, ginger beer, orange creme, and black cherry soda, while Dogfish Head had it's beach (root) beer.

Our entertainment for the evening

Adam juggled for us while we were enjoying the wine and cheese hour at the hotel. We picked Avenue Inn & Spa because it had the highest ratings of all of the places to stay in Rehoboth, and it did not disappoint. It was really economical and completely worth the price. The Inn has a complimentary wine and cheese hour (not the greatest, but at least they offer), complimentary breakfast that is AWESOME (freshly made, delicious, and plenty of healthy options), outdoor hot tub on the roof (which was really nice in the arctic temps actually), a steam room, a sauna, and a huge indoor stainless steel heated pool. We took advantage of all of these, so remember your swim suits!

The juggling redhead

After our entertainment, it was off to the Brewpub to sample the new beer flavors that they were trailing for production, as well as their distillery line of flavored vodkas. While here, we broke out a rousing game of Cards Against Humanity (I warned you, I am obsessed), and it was hilarious. Even our waitress was having a good chuckles. It was amusing to watch people trying to figure out what the 4 of us were doing with cards in the middle of a really busy restaurant on a Saturday night. My opponents did not disappoint with their answers.

After sleeping in for the first time in about 2 months, we woke up to enjoy an awesome breakfast, and then passed a few hours of the morning enjoying the hot tub, steam room, sauna, and pool. I am still thinking about this Inn and weekend...it really was perfect. Before heading out for the day, we meandered around Rehoboth checking out the little shops (being successful in the tea and spice shop, for sure) and getting a few moments on the beach. I will take sun, surf, and sand any way that I can get it now...even on a pathetic cold winter day where I cannot get in the water. The pictures look good minus the fact that we are wrapped up in winter attire to tolerate it.

Rehoboth Beach

Beach love

After a full day of beer tasting, it was time to enjoy other libations, so to the town of St. Michael's we went. This was our first time visiting this town, and after being there, that is very disappointing to say after being back here for almost 3 years now. It is an awesome little town!!! I know that they have a huge wine festival here every year, but it seems so far away (about 1.5 hours from Baltimore)....well, it is not too far for all that it has to offer.

Lyon Distillery

It was unanimous among my car poll, Lyon Distillery was our FAVORITE stop of the whole tour. This place just opened last month and Ben (the guy giving us the tour) is the sole proprietor. His enthusiasm and passion was so captivating, and you know that he will be completely successful. That and the fact that his rum and moonshine are delicious. Yes, you heard that right. DELICIOUS. This is the first rum that I have ever had that I can enjoy drinking completely straight. It has the heat of the rum without any of the burn. I did not even know that was possible. And when have you EVER had moonshine that tasted good?!?!? Not only did it taste good, it didn't hurt going down. What!?!??! I know. That is why I know this will be an outrageously successful company. This was the first "thing" that I have ever encountered that I would feel confident investing in...and of course he doesn't want any investors, wanting to remain sole proprietor.

Final Stop: Eastern Shore Brewing Company

After all of this, we were famished...and wouldn't you know, there is a quaint little cafe right next to the brewer: Gina's Cafe. Very intimate with AMAZING homemade food. They have an awesome local alcohol selection. Adam and I shared the crab and corn chowder and mix plate of all of the appetizers....I am seriously salivating just thinking about how good the food was. Jake and Sarah also ordered dessert, which was a cheesecake wrapped in cinnamon and sugar tortilla that was fried, that they graciously shared, and was TO-FREAKIN'-DIE-FOR. An epic conclusion to such an epic weekend.

Perfect conclusion to a perfect weekend
